Paramedics in Queensland (Australia) Given Power to Chemically Sedate Violent Patients
In Queensland, under new recommendations agitated and violent patients might be sedated by paramedics. In the past, advanced care paramedics could only sedate patients after a consult with superiors. There were 170 physical assaults on paramedics in the 2013-2014. Now, the frontline health workers have been given the right to use the sedative drugs, such as droperidol, which would subdue within 10 minutes. According to Taiwan Patient Safety Reporting System, in 2015, there are 1522 violent incidents in Taiwan. In order to protect the health workers’ right, the legislators modified Medical Care Act in 2014 and 2017. Persons who hinder medical personnel from carrying out medical care practices by means of violence or intimidation when medical personnel engage in medical care practices are subject to imprisonment for no more than three years.
