Risk Balance of Immunization: Vaccine Injury Compensation Program
The Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) in Taiwan was established in 1988. The program aims at timely clarification of causal relationship between injury and immunization, and rapid compensation for affected individuals caused by immunization. The process starts from the application submitted by affected individuals, followed by information collection by health authorities and causality assessment and compensation decision made by the review committee. As of March 2018, 1699 cases had been reviewed and among them 757 cases were compensated. In the future, the competent authority will strengthen the collaboration between the central and local health authorities, and to simplify the application process, in order to minimize doubt and hesitancy about immunization, to implement epidemic prevention or control policies, and to protect public’s health.
