Super-Spreader Key to MERS Outbreak
According to a study report, the 2015 outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in South Korea can be traced largely back to one “superspreader.” MERS-CoV was initially thought to have relatively low transmissibility, but in this case, the patient’s movement through the hospital may also have been a factor. In Taiwan, by regulations of the Communicable Disease Control Act, patients with MERS-CoV will be placed undermandatory isolation care if the physician determines it is the most favorable way preventing transmission or if the patient does not take his or her medicine regularly and refuses the recommendation of hospital care.
